When Edwin Oscar Kimberly of Brodhead, Wisconsin organized a military band for the purpose of joining Sherman on his march to the sea early in January of 1864, he could not have dreamed that his band would someday be re-created, and would carry on his tradition of loyalty and faithful service to his country.
In September of 1964, almost 100 years to the day that Sherman began his historic campaign in northern Georgia, a group of dedicated musicians and Civil War collectors began to assemble as a band, playing all original 1860 period band instruments, and music used by various Union Army Bands, which was located in the Library of Congress. They soon after were designated as the 1st Brigade Band, 3rd and 4th Divisions, 15th Army Corps, which was Kimberly's old band.....the only band from Wisconsin which participated in this campaign with Sherman.
The band grew in size and stature in the years to follow. In February, 1969, this record.....Volume One...was reproduced. More will follow. Come back with us in time to 1864, and let the 1st Brigade Band make history live again, for you.
