Marches & Contra Dances
by the 4th C.A.B.O.M.

For a time, Heritage Military Music Foundation also fielded a Revolutionary War period "Band of Music" - the re-created 4th Continental Artillery Band of Musick. Field bands of this period were very different than 19th and 20th century bands. The instrumentation consisted of flutes, clarinets, oboes, bassoons, natural horns, sackbuts or trombones. Some ensembles would have also included serpents and drums.
The 4th CABOM served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War under Colonel Thomas Proctor, commander of the 4th Pennsylvania Artillery. The 4th CABOM re-created this military band from the late 18th century and, using the original scores, presented the music heard over 200 years ago. Uniforms and gowns of the 4th CABOM are reproductions of authentic dress of the Colonial period and include tri-corn hats and colorful officers' coats with bright facings. The music on this recording comes from The Murray Collection (1781) from Colonial Williamsburg, Twenty-Four Favourite Marches in Seven Parts, As They Are Performed By His Majestie's Horse and Foot Guard (1771), Martial Music of Camp Dupont (ca. 1812), Middlesex Songster of Dedham (1809), American Patriotic Song Book (1813), and Handel's opera Ricardo.
