It has been reported that the most enjoyable duty that a military bandsmen of the 1860’s could pull was to play for rousing barn dances and elegant military dress balls. Our modern day counterparts couldn’t agree more! We have an extensive repertoire of period waltzes, polkas, grand marches, reels , gallops and schottisches. We also have one of the few brass ensembles in the nation with the “horses” required to play for the typical 4-5 hours that are required for these affairs.
There are few wallflowers at a 1st Brigade Band dance. We are very proud of our ability to get everyone involved in a hand-clappin’, foot-stompin, good time. Most people are familiar with the waltz and polka steps; the grand march is an easy way for even the most timid to participate; and we offer instruction in the Virginia Reel, other popular dance reels and a variety of schottische steps and patterns. Why, after some gentle instruction nearly everyone can kick up their heels in a Virginia Reel! Throw in a couple of sentimental ballads (when the dancers are catching their breath) and a sing-along or so and you have a grand evening indeed!
