Unmarked rosewood fife in C with German silver ferrules. Probably manufactured in United States 3rd quarter 19th century. Played by Anton Heine, a Milwaukee native, who was an itinerate peddler. Captured early in the War, he was given the choice of service with the CSA or prison.

Given to him by Col. Hugh Hanna. Accompanied by ambrotype of Lessig in musicians uniform, tintype of Lessig in soldier's uniform, discharge papers, pension documents.
